Work resumes on the Hunt Memorial
Cram and Ferguson have resumed design work on the restoration of the 1903 National Historic Register Listed; Hunt Memorial, Nashua, New Hampshire. Located at the northern end of Main Street on a commanding site overlooking the city the Hunt was the original public library in the City. The building and land were a gift of the wife and daughter of John M. Hunt the first postmaster of the City and a favorite hang out of Nashua children of many generations.
When the new public library was constructed in 1971 the Hunt was left to begin a decades long search for a new purpose. For a time the school department occupied a part of the building but much of the time the primary use has been as a concert venue and as a favored location for wedding receptions. During the last forty years the building has deteriorated due to the natural aging process. In the last ten years small projects have been stitched together to restore the exterior brickwpork and roofs and now under the leadership of Mayor Donnalea Lozeau the interior will be restored and augmented by the addition of an elevator and new heating and air conditioning equipment.
These latest changes designed and supervised by Cram and Ferguson, will make the entire building accessible to wheelschairs, add a new bathroom and provide heated and cooled air to all spaces in the building. When finished the building will be ready to attract new tenants who are expected to include small public services agencies, startups and new businesses.
The work will be bid and is expected to get underway by March 2011.
